Exhibition at College of Idaho
Heart and Cell
Prints and Paintings by Angela Katona-Batchelor and Nicole Herden
The Rosenthal Gallery, College of Idaho, September 25 to December 15, 2009
Opening Reception: 4:30-7:00pm, Friday, September 25
The Rosenthal Gallery is proud to present the work of two artists who create images drawn from scientific illustrations of human anatomy, which they use as metaphors for the relationship between the body and the forces, emotions and beliefs that animate it.
Angela Katona-Batchelor’s prints use the tradition of flap-anatomy books to create three-dimensional images that imaginatively interpret human organs, particularly the heart. The overlapping printed surfaces invite the viewer to explore the physical structure of her works. For Katona-Batchelor, these images are metaphors for the exploration of our mental and spiritual make-up, and the way we have historically attributed spiritual qualities and the fluctuations of our mental states to the functioning, or malfunctioning, of bodily organs.
Katona-Batchelor holds a MFA from Boise State University and teaches at Portland Community College.
